dovetail joint
A joint formed by two interlocking elements; a wedged shaped tenon and a corresponding mortise; used extensively for joining corners in cabinet making; also used for securing structural members in timber frame construction.

 

full dovetail
When the edges of the tenon are cut at an angle.

 

half-dovetail
When only one of the edges is cut.

 

shouldered dovetail
When more than just one member is carried by the mortised member.

dovetail half-lap joint
When one half of the thickness of the tenon cut away.
