“During one of my trips I have found myself sitting at a solid slab al fresco dining table nested under the canopy of tropical trees, exposed to the daily spectacle of sunshine and rain. The table planted by the host in his garden in Bali, 23 years earlier at the birth his first-born, was straight as an arrow, and measured over ten feet in length, four feet in width and over six inches in thickness. Insignificant cracking and checking of this unfinished, untreated, solid piece of lumber intrigued me. Within weeks and with help of the Kuala Lumpur based Malaysian Timber Council, the specie was identified as “Merbau.” Its physical characteristics confirmed the wood as a suitable candidate for the production of exterior architectural components, exposed to tropical, subtropical and coastal conditions.”
